The North Face Shadow 30 + 10 ltr Waterproof Rucksack (as per the 40 ltr +10 shown above but with a different back panel material)

Test Review

After using this rucksack for a couple of weeks we found that its performance relating to load distribution, comfort and balance was as its larger brother and carried the same amount of equipment as the 40 ltr. The rucksack was very stable particularly on steeper slopes up and down and didn't impede walking posture, however, we found a major fault with regard to the back panel material. After just a few uses, the outer panel material became detatched from the back panel it was attached to. This was due to normal body temperatures in warm weather melting the adhesive underneath the outer material. The back panel and covering material is not the same as the 40 ltr which is more robust, this is not mentioned in the promotional material on the companies website, the suggestion is that they are both the same, just different sizes, we found this not to be the case with the back panel material, which is, after all the most important part of the rucksack. The company policy seems to be that the problem has to be referred to the main outlet in Germany for inspection, which can be a lengthy process depending on the problem. We found that the return process if bought directly from the company on line can be quite complicated and may involve the buyer being without either a rucksack or the finance to purchase another one. Our recommendation would be to purchase it from a retailer if in doubt.

We will keep you updated regarding the durability of this product. Up to now we have found absolutely no problem with regard to the 40 ltr + 10 .

Next Review Salomon Footwear

The make of all the boots tested are Salomon

Just a few of the boots that have been thoroughly tried and tested to enable us to select the most suitable for our marathon walk.

X Ultra Mids ~ Cosmic ~ Quest

Cherokee ~ Manilla Mids

See further down for Pros and Cons.

These are the boots we have chosen to use on our Mountain Marathon.

The Saloman X Ultra Mids ~ Goretex

Chosen because:-

     Very comfortable

     Lightweight but supportive

     Tailored lacing system

     Good traction

     Practical cleat pattern ideal for

         variable terrain

     Stable heel cradle

     Supportive anckle cuff without being

         too restrictive

Overall we found this boot to be half way between the Quest and the Manilla Mids, not too heavy yet not too light, but firm enough to be supportive on variable terrain over long distances without causing any foot fatigue.

Although looking specifically for boots for our Mountain Marathon walk we have been using all these different boots over quite a long period of time on a daily basis.

First the Cons:- Generally there are two main problems with Saloman footware in our opinion and that of others who we have spoken to, including some retailers. A big problem is with the sizing and secondly with the durability of the goretex lining.

Sizing:- Every pair of Saloman boots that we have used over the past couple of years has caused a problem due to Salomans

sizing measurements in comparison to most other manufacturers generally they are half a size or more different from everybody elses measurements. This means you will need half a size or even a full size larger than you would normally need. This has been our experience and from what we have read in various personal reviews. On a few occassions the boots have even been mis-matched despite having the same size on the label in both. The way to identify this when buying Saloman boots or shoes is to wear them in the shop and back the heels up to a skirting board to see if one is longer than the other and whether the patterns mis-match on the uppers.

Waterproof durability:- Again, every pair of Saloman Goretex boots that we have tried has failed after half a dozen outings and has been a real problem, especially with the Manilla Mids. Personally, we have resigned ourselves to the fact that this is always going to happen and buy the boots purely for their comfort and support.

Now the Pro's:- Salomans contragrip sole has proved very effective on variable terrain year round. Most of the soles with deep lugs (cleats) prove to be very effective at providing good grip and are quite durable. However, the exception to this is on the Manilla Mids and the Cherokee as we found that while the grip is good, the sole pattern wears down very quickly, especially when used on hard ground. The Quest, the Cosmic and the X Ultra heel cup and underfoot cradle provides stability to the foot when on uneven ground therefore aleviating some of the stress experienced on long walks over difficult terrain while carrying a heavy pack.

To use an analogy, when buying footwear generally is like buying tyres for a vehicle. Depending on the use determines the type of tyre you buy for it and it is the same with footwear, long gone are the days when one pair of boots did everything and lasted for ten or more years. In my case, I regularly replace footwear every two months after having used them on the mountains nearly every day and I know they can be expensive as I have several pairs of different footwear for different uses.

These are our own personal views of the footwear we have used, although we have taken into consideration other peoples views as well. The fact that we are still using Saloman footwear after many, many years, despite having a few problems with them, shows that we still consider them to be among the most practical for the various uses we put them to.

Next Review:-

Buffalo Techlite Shirt and Belay Jacket. Also Rab VR Lite Hooded Jacket.

We have tried and tested many tops throughout the winter and spring. The three listed are what we have chosen which in our opinion are by far the best all round garments for high level long mountain walking. Buffalo techlite shirt. windproof lightweight microfibre lined top. stops wind penetration whilst removing sweat and keeping you warm. difficult to obtain due to Buffalos distribution policy. Needlesports climbing and walking shop in Keswick are the main retailers in Cumbria and kindly donated the techlite top for our marathon. this garment can act as a single layer garment rather than having to wear two or three layers on higher altitudes. this can be topped off by a Buffalo belay jacket providing extra protection from wind and rain. The Rab vr lite is an alternative to the techlite top with the advantage of easy removal if sweated into on ascents. the Buffalo techlite top is difficult to remove after sweating due to moisture sticking to your skin and having to be removed over the head as a smock. The rab however has a front full zip which is easier to get off and put on in windy conditions after sweating on ascents. Buffalo products in our opinion are by far the best all round high level garments if you can get them but be prepared for a very long wait!

NB. we would like to say that re availability of products, we have found that these days it is not the retailers that have problems providing the necessary items but the manufacturers. most brands these days are imported and actual brand names are only owned by distributors as many products are made abroad. Quality is not guaranteed as it was years ago. But Buffalo products are made in this country and quality guaranteed however this means they are very expensive and many retailers have stopped stocking Buffalos products due to supply issues.
